Intimate Morphing Pavilion
25 Nov, 2021; Semester VI, School of Environment & Architecture.
Site: Madh, Malad, Mumbai, India.
Project Area ~ 24.5 sqm
Materials: Laminated Timber, PCC.
Design by: Jainam M, Vanshita P.
The project is to create a intimate or a proximate space using timber as the primary material. The Site is located in Madh, Malad, Mumbai. It acts as an alternative entrance to the building compound.
The Pavilion weaves itself in such a way that it directs the person through it fusing with the plinth and forming a curved path from the entry to the exit. The twisting makes closer or intimate spaces, which brings the material closer to the user.
The cross section of frames is 100mm x 50mm. Every frame is rotated by the angle of rotation of its previous frame with an incrementation of 0.2° i.e. (x + 0.2)° where x is the angle of rotation of the previous frame wrt to the frame. The axis of rotation being the same, the line passing through the center of gravity of the frames. The incrementation of 0.2° is worked out such that it provides a smooth morphing facade within the given length of 7 m.
The Plinth is a simple concrete pad finished at a step up of 150 mm from the ground. For the joineries we used are the groves to join the corners of the structure. The frames are joined using a long metal rod which passes through each frame
